Full Circle 158

This was a Full Circle I expected a long time ago.  There were so many names!  This photo was found in an Eagles Club. Nancy a blogger and friend mailed it to me in hopes it would find a home!

Nancy wrote: A friend found this photo in the disbanded Eagles Club. I will gladly send it to you for your Forgotten Old Photographs blog.  All the soldiers are identified but the place & year are mysteries.
Hopefully it can find a good home.

Lisa left a message on the blog post.  She contacted me by email.  The photo was mailed to her.

Connie –

I wanted to let you know that I received the photo and to thank you for taking the time to send it.

I’m happy to tell you a little about my grandfather, Chester (Chet) E. Swencki, who is in the #8 position, back row:  He was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin.  He enlisted on March 31, 1942 and would’ve been 28 in this photo.  He was processed through Fort Sheridan (IL) but his boot camp was at Camp Roberts (CA).  We actually believe that Camp Roberts is where this photo was taken, as this appears to be a basic training photo. From Camp Roberts, he was deployed to Africa and then spent time in Italy, as well.  He was discharged on December 1, 1945, ultimately married my grandmother (whom I understand he met before he enlisted) and had 3 children and 4 grandchildren.  He died in 1984.

I’ll happily send a note to the friend that found this picture – I’m really curious how it got to Wyoming!

Thanks again for  sending this to me – I’m really excited to have it!

Regards,

Lisa

I was very happy to see this photo go Full Circle!    If someone else would like a copy of this photo I can email it to them.

Thank you Chester E Swencki for your service to our country!

Thanks for stopping by.

Update from MJM:

I'm not sure this is the right family, but on the 1900 census a family living in Fairfield, Grundy County, Iowa seems likely.
W. H. Behrens, head, born 1876
Dora Behrens, mother, born 1856
Emma Behrens, daughter, born 1876
Freta Behrens, daughter, born 1879
Minnie Behrens, daughter, born 1886
Theodore Behrens, servant, born 1883
August Behrens, servant, born 1880
There seems to be several things on this census that are in error, so I am guessing that the two listed as servants are also family members.

Gorge Jobes family DL ant

Thanks for stopping by.

This is a possibility:

George Jobes, born 18 April 1868, Maple Grove, Hennepin county, Minnesota. Son of Bishop and Julian (Cline) Jobes. Died 25 August 1940 in Hennepin county. Married May 1892 to Annie May Martin, daughter of Stewart Martin and Sarah Pryor.

Info from Michael:
The photo includes George Jobes (son of Bishop Jobes and Julian Cline); standing behind his seated wife, Annie May Martin Jobes (daughter of Stewart Martin and Sarah Pryor). The children: Charles Wesley Jobes, standing next to George, He was born in 1891, and is that little boy, wearing that furred coat, that is also featured on your website. The little girl is Hazel Mae Jobes, born 1901. The little boy is Alvin Earl Jobes, born 1904. From the children's appearances, I would then judge the photograph to be dated sometime around 1907-1909.

Sadly the photo is not marked.  It seems to me to be an uncomfortabe pose for the child, her right arm looks awkward to me.

When the photographers used these fancy frames/folders, apparently they came in two pieces, the photo was slipped inbetween the two and sealed….there is no way to take the photo out to look at the back without damaging the folder or the photo or both.

Update from Iggy:
Alvina Catherine Anderson
Birth Date: 4 Dec 1894
Birth Place: Nerstrand, Rice County, Minn.
Marriage Date: 21 Feb 1920
Marriage Place: Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah
Father: Ole Anderson
Mother: Annette Jacobson
Spouse: Ernest Christel Bolte

Update from Jacqi:
What's interesting is that Ernst Bolte, despite the German-sounding name, was born in Hawaii, and was apparently a widower when he married Alvina. Best I can tell from the 1930 census, they had two children in common by that time--a son and a daughter--and perhaps more by the time of the 1940 census.

It looks like the family settled in the northern California Bay area, in Berkeley. Alvina died there on January 10, 1993, but I haven't been able to locate her obituary to find any descendant information.

A wonderful photo, and if you are to go by “the hair rules”  which some mothers obeyed.  This is two boys with hair parted on the side and two girls with hair parted down the middle.  The smallest child made me smile.

Erickon Studio was the photographer in Fargo ND.  Erickson was working in town as a photographer from 1903 to 1916.  It was 1903 –1908 that his business was known as Erickson Studio so we can date this photo to that time frame.

To bad we don’t know who they are.
