4th of July Mc Cook Lake
1913? 1900?
Grandma Celia Farrington, Aunt Esther, Marvin Norton, Aunt Delia, Uncle Ed, Gramp
This is a Velox Postcard with diamonds in the corners of the stamp box so I believe it was used from 1907-1914.That would make it probably 1913 ?
Happy 4th of July from 102 years ago! Thanks for stopping by.
Update from Sue:
So here is who I believe these to be: Celia Etta Hoxie Farrington(b.1880), Esther Ruthama Hoxie Norton(b. 1883), Marvin Norton(b.1879), Delia Ethel Hoxie(b.1880), a twin sister to Celia (married name unsure), Uncle Ed is possible Delia's husband, or it could be Frank Edward Hoxie, a brother to the Hoxie sisters(I will do more searching), and finally, Gramp would be George Farrington (b.1870), Celia's husband. All of these folks resided in the Sioux City Iowa area.
According to a family tree I found, Marvin & Esther had three children: Ralph(1899), Clifford(1901), Sadie (1902). Esther would have been a young mother if these dates are correct, but I guess that wasn't all that uncommon back then.
I believe Celia and George only had one son, Elmer. Elmer had possibly only two children--Gordon, born in 1927, and Lila Mae, born about 1934.

McCook Lake is probably in South Dakota
ReplyDeleteMc Cook Lake is just North and a little West of Sioux City Iowa but it is in South Dakota.
DeleteI found Celia Farrington 1880 to 1937 Buried at Logan Park Cemetery Sioux City Iowa Find a Grave # 111440778
ReplyDeleteThis had me puzzled for a moment, because the information I found, didn't quite match with the photo, as I was thinking Grandma was a separate person, and if Grandma was the parent to Aunt Esther and Aunt Delia and Uncle Ed, she and Gramp would have been dead before the picture was taken. Since there are only six people in the picture, I believe Celia is the one being referred to as Grandma, which would make George Farrington Gramp. If this was written by a grandchild, then the Aunts, and possibly Uncle are Great/Grand Aunts and Uncle. I believe this is the grandson: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21053191&ref=acom, and this is Lila Mae: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21053191&ref=acom
ReplyDeleteWhat I've Found is that Celia and George had one son, Elmer. Elmer had two children, Gordon Lee Farrington (1927-2007), buried in Florida, and Lila Mae Farrington-Robinson (1933-1990), buried in Sioux City, Iowa. I did find some contact info for Gordon's children and will send via email.
Great info, I found Elmer yesterday but that was as far as I got. Thanks! :) No problems with the spacing it is what it is ...have a good nap! :)
DeleteI do not know what happened with all that spacing. Somehow I thought that other information at the top was deleted. Time for a nap! :-)
ReplyDeleteMe again: The correct info for Lila Mae's site: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8787435&ref=acom
ReplyDeleteGlad Sue found all that out. It had me stumped yesterday. Although I did the same: took "Grandma" and "Celia Farrington" to be one and the same person. Lots of good leads to work with now!
ReplyDeleteLooks like they had a blast on the 4th of July!!!
ReplyDeleteSue sent me an address for a relative. I mailed out a copy of the blog today to Kim in Florida. We will wait to see if she wants the photo.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this posted the first time, but will try it again! I do believe the people in the photo to be first cousins to my great-grandfather, Hugh Rutherford Heiney (1878-1960). Hugh's mother was Maria (Rhumstay) Hiney (1842-1914), and Maria's sister, Sarah (Rhumstay) Hoxie (1846-??), was the mother to Welcome, William, Dora, Frank, Delia, Celia, Esther and Ralph Hoxie. Maria and Sarah's parents were William and Esther (Rapp) Rhumstay. The family came to Wisconsin from Pennsylvania in 1845, settling first in Dane County, then in Sauk County. What a great picture! :)
