On the back there is a name.  Albert Bonnheim
Thanks for stopping by.

From Jacqi:
"Albert Bonnheim is known throughout California not more for his success as a merchant than for the great humanitarian work in which he has constantly been engaged since he came to the State in 1876. He has always found time aside from his duties as vice-president of the great retail mercantile firm of Weinstock, Lubin Co. to devote to movements for the betterment of his fellow man...."

From Iggy:
His only son Joseph died at age 16. Albert himself died December 23,1916. His wife, Fanny Weinstock died in the early 1950s. David Lubin was related to Fanny.

  1. You may have found a gem with this photograph, if it turns out to be the right Albert Bonnheim. While I couldn't find anything promising on Find a Grave, nor on Ancestry.com (other than Craig's site there where he posts orphan photos as well), since Albert Bonnheim was a California resident, I took a look at some other, free, online resources and found a bonanza.

The first thing I noticed was the possibility that his wife's maiden name was Weinstock. That immediately called to mind an old department store in town called Weinstock's.

Then, I accessed the California Digital Newspaper Collection, housed at UC Riverside, which provides access to selected newspapers throughout the state, up to the mid 1920s. Since the photograph could have come from anywhere in the state--north or south--I thought this might be the most logical starting point.

It was here that I found a brief entry in the San Francisco Call from February 11, 1905, stating:
"Albert Bonnheim of Sacramento has offered Bonnheim prizes to the students of Stanford University under the same conditions as the Bonnheim prizes are now given at the University of California. The prizes are in cash and are given for what are known as the 'Bonnheim Ethical Dissertations and Discussions,' the object being to stimulate interest in ethical matters."

See? I thought he looked professorial ;)

    But there's more...

Not knowing what a "Bonnheim Prize" was, I googled the term, and found this entry from a UC Berkeley yearbook: "Albert Bonnheim is known throughout California not more for his success as a merchant than for the great humanitarian work in which he has constantly been engaged since he came to the State in 1876. He has always found time aside from his duties as vice-president of the great retail mercantile firm of Weinstock, Lubin Co. to devote to movements for the betterment of his fellow man...."

You can read more from this entry here.

Apparently, the award was named for his son, Joseph Bonnheim.
