Recently I received a whole box of old photos from Katherine in California.  They were passed onto her by a friend, the family was from the San Francisco Bay area and there was no one else to pass them down to.  I do not have them all scanned yet. Some are marked with names and some are not.

This is one of those photos.

Thanksgiving from Katherine

An old Polaroid photograph, most likely from the 1950’s.  The glasses, the turkey and the smiling smoking lady make this a wonderful photo!

Happy Thanksgiving!  I am thankful for each and everyone of my readers and commenters!

Update from Iggy:

Henrietta Matilda Kroning (12 Apr 1896 in Elba, Minnesota - ?) was the daughter of Lewis Edward Kroning (1869 - 1926) and Matilda Agusta Splittstoesser (1871 - 1958). Henrietta is shown in the 1920 US Census as a school teacher living on a farm near Winona.

Henrietta Matilda Schwantz nee Kroning (12 Apr 1896 - 20 Nov 1983) was married to Alfred Julius Schwantz (19 Mar 1892 - 23 Jul 1983) in 1930, they were living in Elgin, Wabasha, Minnesota.

Elma Hagen (abt 1902 in Minnesota - ?) is shown living with sister Margaret in Holloway, Swift, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John J and Mathea Hagen. In the 1930 US Census, Elma is shown as a school teacher living on a farm in Hegbert, Swift, Minnesota.  Elma married John Brustuen.

Margaret married a Leborious. I think the man's name was John J.

Update from Iggy:
This is a possibility.
I found an Agnes Hoverson born in Inkster, Grand Forks, North Dakota May 1899, later found working as a nurse (1921-1923) and living in Minneapolis. She was the daughter of Hover C and Christie Hoverson. I'm not sure since the spelling is so iffy. Likewise, about the "Horner" family, but there is a large one living in Inkster around 1920.

Ages in 1920:

Herbert O Horner 51
Chlio Horner 44
Lyle Horner 20
Luva Horner (Finley) 20
Nina Horner (Garratt) 18
Ruth C Horner (Bang) 16
Fern Horner (Hicks) 14
Verle Horner (Lowe) 9
Dale Horner 2

If this is the family - The littlest one is not in the photo and likely not born yet (making the photo about 1916-18:?

My dad said he thought this photo was taken from around the time she worked in Detroit Lakes as a beautician. Unfortunately, he did not recognize the other woman in the photo.

I offered to send her the photo.

Hi Connie.

I will accept your offer for the photo. Yes, the person on the right is my aunt. Her son lives in the Twin Cities and I could reunite him with it - but I don't have his address offhand! I came across this photo through a last name search on the internet, and was actually surprised that a last name had been written down on the back of the photo. I also asked my dad if he recognized any of the other family names mentioned on that page but he did not. I wasn't too surprised by that as they seem to have been from much farther away. I hope you find the answer to that person's name, and again, I appreciate your offer.

Thanks so much. Maureen

1912 Buick Brainerd Antique back

As it happens a son searched his fathers name on the Internet on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Update from Sam Bissell :
Actually his birthday is June 27, 1913.
Today is his 100th birthday....and I'm glad I found this so I can share it with my family!
He was an was an author of short stories and novels. His early writings were stories and books based on his life working on the Mississippi, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers, as a deckhand, mate, and Captain. His book, "7½ Cents", was based on his time spent working in the family business, H.B. Glover Co., in Dubuque, IA, which was turned into the Broadway musical "The Pajama Game", which won the 1955 Tony Award for Best Musical. He wrote a book about the experience called "Say, Darling", which chronicled a broadway musical production and featured characters based on those he worked with; this book was also turned into a musical with the same name, in 1958.
In the 1960s, after other fictional books, he was hired by Holiday Magazine as a featured writer, which lead him to contributing to other travel magazines, as well. He wrote monthly columns for Venture Magazine as well as Travel and Leisure, which were based on his travels and were always humorous in nature.
He passed away well before his time at the young age of 63. He was survived by his wife, 3 sons, and a daughter.
Thanks for sharing this photo of one of my Dad's old automobiles!
All my best-
Sam Bissell

I get busy during the summer…so it wasn’t until this fall that I emailed for a confirmation that Sam got the photo.

Hi, Connie--
I am so sorry for not getting back to you about the photo. I thought for sure that I had written back to let you know that I did get it. I, in turn, sent it to my sister, who lives in Dubuque, so she could slip it into one of the boxes of photos that sit around my Mom's townhouse. I wish she could see the photo but, sadly, she is going blind and can't see such details of a photo.....it would simply be a blur to her. Many thanks, in any case, for sending it along to me so I could share it with the rest of my family.
The photo was, indeed, taken in the street out in front of my Uncle Fred's house on Alpine St, just off of West Third St in Dubuque.
Thanks again for having the photo online so I could find it on his birthday, last June.

All my best-

Sam
