Full Circle 79

Sometimes it pays off to Google your relatives names.  Erin did a search for her Grandfathers name Max Hird and ended up at Forgotten Old Photos.  The photos were previously declined by a family member.  Now they are happily in Erin’s hands.

Belle Hird was Max Hird’s Aunt.

Hi Connie!

I got the pictures in the mail today.  Thank you so much for sending them to me.

As I said in my comment, Max Hird was my grandfather. He spent the majority of his life on the same farm outside of Edgeley, first being raised by his aunt and uncle (Lester and Mary Treganza) and then taking it over and farming it himself. His favorite hobbies included photography and genealogy; He would have loved your blog! He was struck with scarlet fever as a child, which left him partially deaf. He overcame this unfortunate disability by learning to read lips and eventually getting hearing aids. I can remember watching him discreetly turning them down if Grandma was babbling about something he wasn't interested in or if she was interrupting the news. In 2004 he passed away after a 22 year battle with leukemia. That isn't a typo. :)  He was a strong man and I think about him every day.  You don't know how much it means to me to have these pictures.

Thank you again,

Erin

Erin and her husband also offered to find homes for the other Edgeley photos that I purchased at the antique shop in Moorhead Minnesota.  I am getting them ready to mail, I hope they will all become Full Circles someday.

red Cross winter window and girls Moorhead ant
Two gals and a dog in front of a window with a red cross.  As far as I know Red Cross Classes were taught in public places like schools and medical supplies would have been available there. When cars became more popular and accidents happened there was need of First Aid Stations.  If anyone else knows different information I hope you will share.

From Iggy:
I think the Red Cross signs were used during WWI as a "support our troops" fund-drive.

"For homes, stores, factories and offices 'there is a Red Cross service flag to be displayed in windows.'"

Christmas 1955 Tin Ceiling

This must have been taken in 1954 at Christmas time and developed in January of 1955.  I will guess this is a Father and a daughter posing for a photo.  Note that the gentleman has hearing aids…and that is some fancy wallpaper in the background.  I enjoyed seeing a tree covered in tinsel.

Update from Iggy:
Eugene Clayton (23 Mar 1875 in Forest, Rice, Minnesota - Mar. 20, 1936 in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas) and Stella H Graham (15 Dec 1872 in Illinois - 2 Jul 1960 in California, appears in the 1940 US census as widowed, living in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California) had this baby, Helen Elizabeth Graham (30 Aug 1906 - 1 Jul 1989) in Minnesota but then moved to Kansas, Ohio, and then back to Kansas and then Stella and Helen moved to Los Angeles.

Helen married a Mr. Macy.

Update from grandmavickiann:
This could be Sarah Best
She was born in 1881 in Minnesota, the daughter of William and Abbie Best. At the time of the 1910 Census, her father had died, and she was living with her mother and siblings Ina, Imir and Mary, all girls, as well as her maternal grandmother, Sarah Thomas, for whom it appears that she was named. According to the NDSU biography, there was also a brother, Will.

The NDSU Library has several feet of items donated by Sarah Best and Ina Best. They must not have married. Her father was once mayor of Casselton and Chief of Police of Fargo. He died in 1898.

Dec. 12  Christmas once again!  We’ll be alone this year.  Harry’s folks were here 17 days in Nov. so they spent Thanksgiving with us.  We were all home last yr for Xmas, but I don’t kno’ of anyone who can make it this year.
What do you think of our family?  David is twelve +makes close to $60 a mo. on his paper route.  I told him I made that much teaching school. Ruth is 8 and Peggy 2.  She chatters a mile a minute + is so thrilled about xmas.
Is there a program at the church this year?  I had to make an angel costume for Ruthie.  David is Joseph.
I just wish I had time to write letters instead of notes.  Seems I never start soon enough. but I’ll write u more after Xmas.
Best Wishes for good health + a happy holiday season.  Greetings to Max and Barbara.  Alice

A couple of cute kids enjoying a record on the Snow White  Record Player.  The Christmas tree was one of those on the table top and for some reason someone cut a small square out of the photo.  The record player was mainly yellow with red bands along the top and the bottom.  Perhaps a reader will recognize that doll the little girl is holding.
